I am on the editing team for the literary magazine, Satori, at Winona State University. The magazine expresses the artistic spirit of students and features poetry, prose, and graphic art.
Today we took part in a bookmaking workshop, and I fell in love with all the different ways of bookbinding. At the end we created our own book and sewed the binding with thread. It is times like these that I can never see myself ever owning a kindle, nook, or iPad. The feeling of holding a book, especially one that is bound so beautifully, will always win over the allure of the ebook. And I do see the allure, but it makes me sad to see the printed word being lost. As you can see on the top of my page, “I pledge to read the written word” and I will continue to do so.
Anyways back to the point at hand, bookmaking-Take a look at these beautiful! beautiful! books:
This type of binding is called a codex and is similar to what we did in the workshop.

Here you see a collection of all kinds of bindings, all intricate and all unique. ah! If you want to learn more about the art of bookbinding, check out this website. And if you feel yourself getting inspired, create your own codex bound book!
